Old Remington Rifle History and MEMORABILIA IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING Folks, I would guess that Nelson Story is the one pioneer frontier scout who has been written about most consistently. And yet, as funny as it seems, he has kinda lost his place in the legends of the old west. He certainly deserved better. So I started reading this as if it was another story of his feats on the Texas Cattle Trail. WAS I SURPRISED! Hidden between Story’s heroic Injun fights, the author chose to incorporate a history of the Remington Rifle that saved the west. And he has done a remarkable job. And, please, don’t hold it against me if I put a caliber wrong or a model numbered incorrectly or missed the correct title of the gunsmiths of the west. I have spent hours indexing this piece for it has never been done before. Certainly, for those of you who study the guns of the old west, I have never found a better explanation of the rise of the Remington rifle. There was a better rifle, named the Sharp. Trouble was, however: It shot itself to death. The Sharp was heavier and possibly more accurate. It was so efficient that nearly single handedly it had annihilated the vast herds of buffalo on the American plains. But with the buffalo gone, there was a need for a lighter, more efficient rifle. Remington’s Rolling Block Breech System Filled That Bill There were many a western story published – the common ones about Cowboys and Indians are listed on Ebay every day but the rarer ones about the FANTASTIC GUNS OF THE PIONEERS are seldom found. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out because really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest. Here’s one of ‘em. Following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western heroes. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf gathering dust. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell. This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost. Humbly, I am trying to keep our history alive. I hope you appreciate the effort. Nelson Story Out-Fought Crazy Horse By: J. L. Beardsley Folks, sooner or later – Genealogists are going to realize that their family kinfolks are laying on some dealer’s dusty shelves. If I can contribute to finding one little name or photo of that long lost ancestor you have been waiting to find, it’s worth all the time I spend. As a tribute to the honor of our American Indians, my indexed listings will include all Indian names mentioned in the story from this time on..
